Peptide primer
Approved, compounded, investigational.
Every peptide on our site carries one of three labels. Here's what they mean — and why we always tell you which is which.
FDA-approved
What does FDA-approved mean?
Medications approved by the FDA for specific indications, with established dosing and safety data. Use for other purposes is off-label and physician-determined.
e.g. semaglutide, tirzepatide, testosterone
Physician-compounded
What is a physician-compounded peptide?
Prepared by a licensed compounding pharmacy for an individual patient under a physician's prescription. Not FDA-approved as finished products; regulated differently.
e.g. sermorelin, NAD+
Investigational
What does investigational mean?
Compounds with early or emerging evidence that are not FDA-approved. Availability is limited and subject to current federal and state rules.
e.g. BPC-157, TB-500, Semax
What do patients ask about peptides?
A peptide is a short chain of amino acids that acts as a signaling molecule in the body. Insulin and GLP-1 medications such as semaglutide are peptides; so are many investigational compounds such as BPC-157.
A peptide's regulatory status shows how much evidence and oversight stands behind it. OPTIMIZE MD labels every option as FDA-approved, physician-compounded or investigational so patients can make an informed decision with their physician.
No. OPTIMIZE MD only uses therapies sourced through licensed pharmacies and prescribed after a physician evaluation.
Yes. At OPTIMIZE MD, eligibility for any peptide is determined by a physician evaluation, medical history and lab results — and often the right answer is something simpler than a peptide.
